SPEAKE, Ala. — A woman used her telephone to chase off an intruder who was armed with a Taser when he entered her home. Lawrence County Sheriff Gene Mitchell said the woman, whose name was not released but who was described as a grandmother, was not seriously injured in the home invasion around 8 p.m. Saturday.
He said that when the woman noticed the porch light not working, she opened the door to check on it and the man forced his way inside. Mitchell said the man tried to use the Taser as the woman resisted.
''She thinks she was hit,’' he told The Decatur Daily in a story Monday. ''Why it didn’t put her down, we don’t know. Then she used the telephone as a weapon and fought back. The man ran off.’'
He said there have been several similar incidents in the area during the past few months.
''This woman and her granddaughter were alone at the house, and they were scared,’' Mitchell said. ''But like some of the others, she just wasn’t going to put up with it.’'
Mitchell said the two have been relocated.
''We’re not ready to identify the grandmother and the granddaughter is a juvenile,’' Mitchell said. ''We’re also not releasing any more information about the intruder.’'
A message left with the sheriff wasn’t immediately returned Monday.
