OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. - “I need a supervisor.”
Those were the words repeatedly uttered by former Michigan State and NFL defensive lineman Malik McDowell during a February encounter with police. It’s the latest legal issue for the once-promising player who was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in 2017.
News of McDowell’s arrest isn’t new, since he was charged with assault and resisting arrest, along with operating a vehicle while intoxicated after the incident.
But TMZ obtained and released surveillance footage of the Detroit native’s arrest on Tuesday.
In the video, the 6'6", 300-pound lineman can be seen engaging in a heated conversation with a police officer in front of a Lathrup Village gas station after he witnessed McDowell’s Jeep spinning out on a snowy road after speeding.
The officer repeatably asks McDowell for his license and registration, to which McDowell only replies, “I need to see your supervisor.”
McDowell eventually disobeys the officer’s commands to sit in his car and enters the gas station, leading to a physical altercation that knocks over several shelves of food.
The officer eventually uses his Taser on McDowell, which proves ineffective on the massive McDowell, who then attacks the officer. The two wrestle around the store until backup officers eventually arrive and help take McDowell into custody.
Once considered a first-round NFL talent, McDowell’s path since leaving MSU has been anything but good.
In April, a stolen truck was traced to a garage close to McDowell’s residence. He told police that he had purchased it for $3,000 off the street, and didn’t know it was stolen. The Ford F-150 Raptor pickup is valued at $74,000.
He also was arrested in Atlanta in 2017 for disorderly conduct.
He never played a down in the NFL for the Seahawks after a preseason ATV accident ended his rookie year. He still owes the Seahawks $800,000 in repayment of his signing bonus.
McDowell played three seasons for the Spartans and recorded 90 tackles, including 24.5 for a loss, and 7.5 sacks in 36 games before leaving with one year of eligibility remaining.
