CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A viral video posted to social media captures a man giving hugs to officers in riot gear during the second night of police protests in Charlotte.
According to The News & Observer, activist Ken Nwadike approached some of the officers in formation and embraced them. The viral video, which has garnered over 25 million views, also shows some hostility from the crowd towards Nwadike after the gesture.
After protesters ask Nwadike why he is reaching out to officers on the scene, Nwadike can be heard in the video saying, “This uniform doesn’t make him a robot, just like your uniform, your skin color, doesn’t make you a criminal. That’s what I need people to understand.”
Nwadike later expanded on what he said during the protest via a comment on Facebook:
“Last night was very risky and difficult being on the frontline fighting for peace. I lost my patience with a few people, but I know I got through to many and kept some from getting arrested. Unfortunately, a young man was shot in the head during the protests. Condolences to his family. Hate and violence won’t fix the damage that has been done, only love can do that.”
