In a small department, where you may be the only one at a crime scene, I have learned to use the victim (when appropriate) to assist with my photo collecting. I ask for their help and then explain what they can do to help me: ie - holding the ruler or pointing to an object that is hard to see. This gives them the feeling that they are helping instead of getting in the way. Plus, it gives you that extra hand.
