Ore. cops foil planned Halloween gang shooting

Officers say they’re continuing to investigate

EUGENE, Ore. — Police in Eugene say they’ve foiled a plot by a criminal gang to shoot members of a rival gang on Halloween.

Sgt. Scott McKee tells The Register-Guard that officers gathered information about the plan through confidential sources, then notified both gangs that they knew of the plan.

McKee says officers have stepped up patrols and gone door-to-door to notify residents of the threat of violence. Police say the plot could be retaliation for an attempted shooting on Sept. 23 that was thwarted by a malfunctioning handgun.

Police are advising parents to be vigilant if they take their children trick-or-treating and to stay with them at all times.

Officers say they’re continuing to investigate but conspiracy charges are difficult to prosecute.
