MIAMI — A student shot and killed a 13-year-old girl in front of her younger sister and seven other children on a school bus Tuesday morning in Homestead, Fla., police said.
The girl, Lourdes Guzman-DeJesus, was flown to Miami Children’s Hospital, where she died, Miami-Dade police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta said. She was a student at Palm Glades Preparatory Academy charter school.
Detectives spent the day gathering evidence and trying to interview students.
Late Tuesday, Miami-Dade police charged Jordyn Alexander Howe, 15, of Homestead with one count of manslaughter and one count of carrying a concealed firearm.
Jordyn and Lourdes were both on board the bus, on their way to school, when Jordyn pulled the gun out of his backpack and displayed it, according to an arrest affidavit.
The gun went off once, the affidavit said, striking Lourdes.
Jordyn was taken to Miami-Dade police headquarters, where he provided a sworn statement to police, the affidavit said. Tuesday night, he was taken to Miami-Dade Juvenile Assessment Center.
No one else was injured.
