The officers allegedly ran their own security operation, demanding cash payment to avoid city rules and fees

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — As many as 10 Jersey City police officers could be indicted on corruption charges for running a private security operation.

According to NBC New York, the officers allegedly demanded cash in order to avoid city fees and rules. Officers are allowed to work off-duty jobs, but companies must hire them through the city and pay administrative fees.

Officers were paid when they didn’t show up to areas that needed private security, according to investigators.

Officials have not commented if any businesses are facing punishment.

A spokeswoman for Jersey City’s mayor said the administration could not comment on the ongoing federal investigation, but they “remain vigilant and [have] a history of rooting out corruption.”
