SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - A Taylorsville police officer was charged with negligent homicide for running a red light in his cruiser and colliding with another driver, killing the 27-year-old commuter.
31-year-old Joseph James Corbett was joining a chase for a man with outstanding warrants in a stolen vehicle who was eventually captured.
District Attorney Lohra Miller announced she was filing the misdemeanor charge yesterday but didn’t fully explain what the officer did wrong.
Miller didn’t respond to messages from The Associated Press.
Corbett had his lights and sirens on and was rushing to deliver a set of road spikes in the high-speed chase.
The officer was traveling 58 miles-per-hour in a 40 mile-per-hour zone.
He collided with John Terry Douglas of Tooele, who died at the scene.
