LONG BEACH, Calif. — A K-9 was shot and killed during a hours-long standoff with a suspect Tuesday.
NBC Los Angeles reports SWAT officers were attempting to apprehend a man wanted in connection with a shooting involving multiple victims when the K-9, 4-year-old Credo, was shot.
The police dog died after being transported to a veterinary clinic for treatment. In a heartbreaking aerial photo taken from the scene, an officer can be seen grieving next to the fatally wounded K-9.

The suspect was also taken to a local hospital for treatment and was pronounced dead.
No other officers were injured in the incident. Officials have not released further details on the shooting.
The department paid tribute to the K-9 via their Twitter page and identified the dog’s handler, Officer Mike Parcells. This is the second time Parcells has tragically lost a K-9 in the line of duty, according to the report.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Parcell’s previous K-9, Ranger, was shot and killed by a suspected gang member in 2005.
Credo was involved in over 30 arrests during his time with the Long Beach Police Department, according to the PD’s Twitter.
