ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A police dog who was choked and cut in the line of duty won an “A-plus award” from the mayor on Wednesday, as did his handler, officer Drew Bader.
The two apprehended a 19-year-old suspect who had fled from a stolen vehicle, Mayor Martin Chávez said in a ceremony at City Hall.
Rozko, the service dog, followed the suspect into the crawl space under a house during the July 10 incident. The suspect, armed with a knife, choked Rozko until he was nearly unconscious and cut him on the back of his neck.
Bader climbed under the crawl space, too, and — as Rozko regained his wits — the two apprehended the suspect.
Rozko was treated for his injuries and was back on the job the next day.
“It’s a great example of partnership by man and animal,” Chávez said. “As a result, Albuquerqueans are safer.”
The mayor also announced an “A-plus award” would be given to Jeff Abernathy, a police officer who was hit by a truck while writing a ticket.
Abernathy was struck last month on Interstate 40.
The awards are given to outstanding Albuquerque citizens. About four are issued each year
