A civilian was fatally shot outside a Houston nightclub early Sunday morning and three Harris County deputies who were on scene working second jobs were injured.
A brawl broke out around 2 a.m. Sunday outside the Set nightclub in midtown, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed after the shooting. That’s when the off-duty deputies stepped in.
The suspect, described only as a man in his 20s, began firing.
A Hispanic woman around 40 years old was shot and pronounced dead at the hospital.
A female deputy was shot in the abdomen, one of the male deputies in the foot and another male deputy in the hand.
“A tragic night but it could’ve been a lot worse,” Gonzalez said during a press briefing.
“We’re just going to be out here lifting them up. We’re strong, we’re together and we’re going to pull through this. We’re going to make sure that both our agencies continue to work together in full support of the families. That’s the most important thing.”
All three deputies are expected to survive.
The suspect tried to get treatment for a gunshot wound at a local hospital and was taken into custody there.
The shooting came just a day after a Harris County sergeant, 51-year-old Bruce Watson, was killed in a motorcycle accident
