SALEM, Ore.— Oregon State Police arrested a 47-year old Salem woman Monday morning on several charges including attempted murder after she struck her 48-year old husband with her vehicle outside their residence following an alleged domestic-related incident. The victim, an off-duty Salem police officer, is reported in critical condition at Salem Hospital.
The initial investigation indicated on December 10, 2012 at approximately 1:19 a.m. the victim, Kenneth Nunez age 48, was walking toward his motorcycle parked in front of his residence when he was struck by a 2003 Ford F-150 pickup driven by his wife, Shirley Nunez, age 47. A few minutes before the reported crash, Salem police was responding to a reported incident in the 1800 block of Torrance Street S. where an adult female reported Shirley Nunez, armed with a handgun, came to the residence. Shirley Nunez allegedly entered the residence through a rear sliding glass door, pointed the handgun at the woman and briefly confronted her about a suspected relationship involving the woman and Kenneth Nunez before leaving in the pickup.
Shirley Nunes was initially transported to Salem Hospital for a medical evaluation before OSP detectives arrested her and lodged her at the Marion County Jail on the following charges:
- Attempted Murder
- Assault in the First Degree
- Burglary in the First Degree
- Menacing
- Pointing a Firearm at Another Person
- Unlawful Use of a Weapon
The investigation is ongoing with the assistance of Keizer Police Department, Salem Police Department and Marion County District Attorney’s Office.
According to Salem Police Department, Kenneth Nunez has worked for Salem police since November 2005 and is currently assigned in the Patrol Division as a Patrol Officer. He has previous experience with an out of state law enforcement agency.
