STANTON, Ky. — A Stanton detective died Feb. 11 after suffering a fatal heart attack following a struggle with an armed suspect.
Detective James Kirk, 40, responded to a call for assistance on Feb. 10 to assist other officers in arresting a non-compliant suspect, the department said in a media release. A struggle involving Kirk ensued before the man was taken into custody.
Kirk collapsed outside the Powell County Courthouse the following day. He was pronounced dead at Clark Regional Medical Center.
Kirk served in law enforcement in Powell County for 18 years, the department said. Prior to serving as a detective with the Stanton Police Department, he served as chief of police with the Clay City Police Department. He was posthumously honored with the SCPD’s Meritorious Service Award. He is survived by his wife, daughters, grandson, mother and sister.
