GREENE COUNTY, NC — Deputy John Willis was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call at approximately 7:30 p.m. in Greene County, North Carolina on Wednesday.
Willis arrived at the scene and called the suspect, 22-year-old Daniel Meyers, by name, according to reflector.com. Meyers, who was drunk at the time, came out of the house and opened fire on the deputy with a handgun, striking him twice. The man then turned the gun on himself and committed suicide.
A second deputy arrived on the scene shortly after and discovered the Willis.
One officer described Willis as “a quiet man until you got to know him, then he’d open up and start talking to you. He did his job well and professionally. It’s just a tragic thing.”
Deputy Willis is survived by two children.
