NEW YORK — An NYC MTA officer died Monday from injuries he suffered after being struck by a vehicle on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge last year.
According to CBS New York, 62-year-old Officer Thomas Choi is the first officer to be killed in the line of duty in the 81-year history of the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority.
Officer Choi was hit in October 2013 while removing barrels during the reopening of the bridge.
He was transported to a local hospital but never regained consciousness.
The 26-year-old driver was cleared of any criminal wrongdoing at the time of the incident and was not charged, according to the report.
“Officer Choi dedicated himself to serving and protecting everyone who travels the bridges and tunnels that unite New York, and all of us at the MTA join in mourning him,” MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas Prendergast said, according to a news release.
Choi is survived by his daughter and son.
