Be prepared before cuffing

Every criminal remembers the few moments between absolute freedom and the feeling of cold metal wrapping around his wrists. This is supposed to be the time in which the offender submits or has supposedly had enough. Realistically, though, this is one of those “routine” moments that’s not routine at all, when you should be especially careful.

Be just as prepared to strike as you were prior to the subject’s “submission.” I see video after video, story after story, of attacks happening just before handcuffing. Take a tactical stance, one that will give you the edge if the offender turns to attack. If you’re standing flat-footed, smiling at the neighbors because you think you’ve won, stop it! You are not done with the individual until the jailer says, “He’s ours now.” A subject “giving up” doesn’t always mean he’s given up.
