If the shoe fits, check it

On a recent traffic stop, I contacted a male passenger who had numerous hits for concealed weapons and drugs. I asked him to step out of the vehicle and received verbal consent to search him. In the search I found a pair of brass knuckles in his left front pants pocket. I immediately handcuffed him and conducted another search. I did not find any other weapons. I transported him to the station, where I placed him in a cell and conducted another search, which revealed nothing.

Our policy is to have suspects remove their shoes. The clerk came out to assist. I asked the prisoner to remove his shoe. He took it off and started to stuff something back in it. I stepped on the shoe and slid it back to the clerk. Inside the shoe was a large quantity of marijuana and cocaine. He started to take the other shoe off and I immediately stepped on the shoe and slid it back to the clerk. What was found in his shoe was amazing: A loaded 6" loaded .375 revolver. He was not walking funny or limping. Luckily for us he did not want to fight at any point. I will be changing the way my prisoners take their shoes of in the cells. They’ll remain handcuffed, I’ll untie their shoes and they can slip them off.
