According to a report released by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 65 LEOs have died in the line of duty this year, an increase of 30 percent from the same time period last year.
The report, which has data compiled up until June 30, 2017, said traffic-related incidents are the leading cause of officer deaths in 2017, while firearms-related incidents were the second-leading cause of death. Specifically, single-vehicle crashes were the leading circumstance of the traffic-related fatalities with 10 so far this year. A total of 26 officers have been killed in traffic-related incidents in 2017, compared to 21 officer deaths during the same time period last year.
Out of the 65 officers killed this year, 62 were male and three were female. On average, the officer left behind two children and was around 47 years old.
