The officers were conducting a welfare check when the dog attacked

WITTMANN, Ariz. — A deputy shot and wounded a dog while responding to a call after it charged at him.

Sgt. Daniel McPheeters and Deputy Fernando DeLaTorre were conducting a welfare check Sunday when what officers described as a “pit bull” charged at the officers from the home, AZCentral.com reported.

The video shows McPheeters backing away from the dog then falling backward and opening fire.

The unidentified owner took the dog to an emergency veterinarian and it is now recovering at home.

Officials concluded that McPheeters was justified in his use of force, the publication reported.

“We do care for the safety of all when we respond to these calls,” Capt. Paul Chagolla said. “This is a very unfortunate situation that could have resulted in significant harm to our first responders.”

Deputies received a tip that potential criminal activity was occurring at the home. Officials said in a statement that they found no criminal activity.
