CEDAR CITY, Utah — A Utah Highway Patrol trooper was seriously injured after a vehicle struck him Monday July 6, The Independent reported.

The trooper, Dave Schiers,, was investigating the crash of a Ford sedan that had hydroplaned and hit the middle highway barrier. The trooper was outside of his vehicle and talking to the driver of the Ford, when a BMW hydroplaned and crashed into both of them.

“The force of the collision caused the Ford passenger car to strike the trooper and the Ford was pushed on top of the trooper,” Cedar City Police Officer Sgt. Jimmy Roden said to The Independent.

The fire department used Jaws of Life to remove trooper from underneath the vehicle.

The police department is still investigating both crashes. The trooper was sent to the hospital with severe injuries but is in stable condition. None of the other parties have reported any injuries.
