BUFORD, Ga. — An incident that involved several people smoking marijuana at a Buford apartment complex ended deadly late Tuesday night, as Gwinnett police officers shot a man after a TASER didn’t subdue him.

Gwinnett Police Cpl. Jake Smith said at about 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday that the officer-involved shooting occurred at 92 North Alexander St. in Buford.

When officers arrived, they found five or six people in the parking lot, and the officers identified and frisked them.

A Hispanic male then pulled away from the first officer, and pulled a handgun out of his clothes and held it to his own head. After the man didn’t follow orders to drop the gun, one officer struck the man with a Taser, but it didn’t incapacitate him, Smith said.

Then man then pulled out the probes, and pointed his gun at the officers.

Three officers then fired at the suspect, who was killed, Smith said. No officers or bystanders were hurt, Smith said.

Smith said the Deadly Force Investigation Team would investigate this case, and the officers involved would be placed on administrative leave, which is normal procedure.

Smith did not identity the victim pending notification of next of kin.
