BALTIMORE, Md. — Police have surrounded a house along Cavan Drive in Baltimore County where they said they believe a gunman who shot at an officer might be hiding. The search is causing rush-hour traffic delays.
Police told WBAL radio that the gunman was one of two people involved in a confrontation with an officer who was investigating a call about destruction of property. The gunman and the officer exchanged gunfire.
Police do not believe there is anyone else in the house.
The Beltway ramp to northbound York Road is closed because of the search, and York Road from West Seminary Avenue to the Beltway is also closed.
The man fired several shots at an officer on patrol in his police cruiser early this morning.
The man, who was dressed in a dark coat, possibly camouflaged, fired at the officer as he ran from an area in the 100 block of Hedgewood Road, near York Road, at about 5:30 a.m., said Cpl. Jim Elliott of the county police department.
The officer on patrol, whose name was not released, was not injured, said Elliott.
