RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif.—A police officer repeatedly shot a 24-year-old man who allegedly tried to run him over with a car, authorities said.
The shooting occurred early Friday morning after authorities stopped Yuriy Martynov for driving without license plates, said Sgt. Tim Curran, spokesman for the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department.
Martynov, who had a felony arrest warrant, refused a sobriety test, struggled with the officer and got back in his car. He then attempted to run down the officer, who fired multiple shots at Martynov, Curran said.
Deputies arrested Martynov after a 90-mph chase through parts of Sacramento.
Martynov, who was shot a number of times in the arm and upper body, was recovering at an area hospital.
The officer was placed on administrative leave pending investigations by the sheriff’s department and the district attorney, Curran said.
It was the second police shooting this week by a sheriff’s deputy. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department contracts officers to the Rancho Cordova Police Department.
