HUNGER, SC — Officials have released dash cam footage of a deadly officer-involved shooting that occurred Feb. 26.
According to WPDE, the incident started as a Berkeley County Sheriff’s Deputy tried to initiate a traffic stop.
The deputy pulled into a gravel driveway, where 51-year-old Joseph Hart immediately fired shots after stopping his vehicle.
The deputy hid behind his patrol car for roughly 30 minutes as he tried to deescalate the situation. He asked Hart to drop the gun several times.
Police say Hart used multiple weapons during the incident including a shotgun, rifle and handguns. The deputy’s vehicle can be seen riddled with bullet holes and his windshield shattered.
A SWAT team eventually arrived in an armored vehicle and tried to get Hart to surrender, but he continued to shoot at police.
Hart was fatally shot during the shooting.
