Police shot and killed a 54-year-old Alpharetta man in the parking lot of a north DeKalb County shopping center Wednesday.
The department, in a statement issued Wednesday night, said that officers were called to the Cambridge Square shopping center about 12:50 p.m. by a woman who told them that her friend, Carroll Carter Oaks, was sitting in a sport utility vehicle armed with a gun and was threatening himself.
When officers tried to talk Oaks into stepping out of the SUV, they noticed a gun inside, Lt. Lawrence Florea said in the statement.
Department spokesman Herschel Grangent said the man ignored warnings to show his hands. He was shot when he reached for the gun and refused commands to drop the weapon, Florea said.
Oaks was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died.
A search of the SUV later yielded a firearm, Florea said.
No one else was injured. The shooting occurred at the edge of a parking lot serving a Starbucks and other businesses at Ashford Dunwoody and Johnson Ferry roads.
Police questioned the woman who was with Oaks, but would not say whether the two had been arguing. The woman, who was not charged, declined to comment.
