MOBILE, Ala. — A man accused of shooting an undercover officer in Alabama has apologized and says he was high on crystal meth at the time.
Multiple news media outlets report 32-year-old Ryan Burkhardt apologized to the officer and his family Wednesday while police pushed him in a wheelchair on his way to the Mobile County jail.
Mobile Police Chief James Barber told local news media that officers met with Burkhardt to buy crystal meth and firearms during an undercover sting last Friday. Officials say Burkhardt eventually fled and shot an officer after a chase.
Authorities say the officer was shot twice, but is expected to recover. Burkhardt was also wounded.
Burkhardt faces several charges including attempted murder, eluding police, and drug and weapons offenses. An attorney isn’t listed for him in court records.
