RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Calif. — On December 29, 2022, Riverside County (Calif.) Sheriff’s deputy Isaiah Cordero was shot and killed during a traffic stop. Now, the department has released body and helicopter camera footage of the pursuit that ended in a shootout, fatally wounding the suspect.

FOXLA.com reported Cordero attempted to stop a vehicle driven by William Shae McKay, but McKay opened fire on Cordero as he was approaching the vehicle, killing him. McKay fled the scene, prompting a manhunt that turned into a pursuit through San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

In the helicopter footage, dozens of police vehicles are seen pursuing McKay’s pickup truck. Officers used spike strips and PIT maneuvers to try to stop McKay, but the pursuit continued. McKay eventually came to a stop under the overpass of an interstate in Norco after Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco said a “mechanical malfunction” caused the truck to swerve, according to the report.

Body camera footage from five deputies involved in the shootout show officers crouched behind cruiser doors, while yelling: “Hold your fire!” An armored vehicle can also be seen pinning McKay’s truck to the side of the interstate. McKay, who had an active felony warrant on a case involving a kidnapping and stabbing of a California Highway Patrol K-9, was out on bail at the time of the incident. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
