WATERTOWN, Mass. — Watertown Police Chief Ed Deveau has told how one of his officers used a police SUV as a battering ram to give fellow cops time to recover from the gun battle with the Boston bombing suspects.
The officer arrived on the scene Thursday night and immediately became a target, as his vehicle was fired on at least once, according to Chief Deveau. That’s when he put the vehicle in drive, got out of the squad, and let it roll down the street, allegedly distracting the two gunmen, who continued to fire at the SUV.
Deveau told media that the officer apologized to his captain after the incident, saying he hoped the chief would not be mad that the daring move resulted in a damaged cruiser.
“I said, ‘Sarg, are you kidding me? They’re going to be writing about you in the textbooks now. That was brilliant, under a very difficult situation to be able to think that through; to be able to do that,” Deveau told reporters.
