DETROIT — An officer collapsed on duty and died Sunday, closing out 16 years of service with Detroit police.

Almondo Greer-Travis, 40, was at the 12th Precinct when he fell for unknown reasons, The Detroit Free Press reported. An autopsy will attempt to identify the exact cause of death.

Greer-Travis, father of three, came from a police family, with stepfather Ernest Travis serving as a lieutenant with the Detroit Police Department, which inspired his stepson to become an officer, according to the Detroit News. Wife and high school sweetheart, Stacy, also serves on the force and was promoted to sergeant the same day as her husband.

City Council President Charles Pugh, Greer-Travis’ brother, said the officer once helped arrest a knife-wielding man after convincing police to hold off shooting and let him speak to the suspect. Another time, Pugh said, he saved people inside a home engulfed in flames as a loaded gun inside fired bullets in the heat.
