SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — A Springfield police officer was shot and killed Monday while responding to an apparent domestic dispute.

The Officer Down Memorial Page identified the officer as Kevin Ambrose, a 36-year veteran of the Springfield Police Department.

Police say a man came to pick up belongings from his girlfriend’s house. The boyfriend reportedly shot the woman and then shot Officer Ambrose, who was pronounced dead at the local hospital, according to NECN.

A flag at the department headquarters has been lowered to half-staff in mourning, and the death of Ambrose is the first fatal shooting of a Springfield officer since two were killed in November 1985, WWLP reported.

Police will hold a news conference Monday evening.
