WYOMING, MI — Police have released video of officers and passerby fighting to free a man trapped in his burning vehicle. Witnesses told police that a northbound vehicle, traveling at a high speed, crashed into a semi-truck that was turning onto Clyde Park.

Police found the vehicle engulfed in flames. Witnesses had already pulled two people from the vehicle, but a front-seat passenger, Clarence Lewis, 26, was trapped by his seat belt.

Officers Jeremy Walter, Steve Rellinger and Robert Meredith and witnesses then worked to free Lewis by using fire extinguishers to keep flames back while Walter used a knife to cut the seat belt so he could be pulled to safety. Capt. Kim Koster said Walter, who had a knife on his police belt, said he “wasn’t going to go home at the end of his shift without getting that guy out.”
