NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — An officer has resigned after video of him “brake-checking” another motorist and causing a minor collision went viral.
In the video, the motorist, Chad Walton — who has dash-cam mounted in his truck — is seen behind Deputy Craig Culpepper in the left lane. Walton passes on the right, before Culpepper catches up, passes on the right as well, and then brakes into Walton’s bumper.
Culpepper told ABC 4 News that he was baited by Walton into causing the incident. He said Walton rode up behind him and flashed his lights at him before the video began.
“I fell for it hook, line and sinker,” Culpepper said.
Walton claimed the officer was holding up traffic by going 50 mph in a 60 mph zone, according to the report.
“I felt antagonized by him and I really just wanted the guy to go away,” Culpepper said. “If you want to go do your thing, go do your thing. Don’t bother me with it.”
After Walton rear-ended Culpepper, he called 911 to report the accident.
Walton can be heard telling the dispatcher that he was “being chased” by Culpepper. “I’m afraid for my life,” he said.
Culpepper claimed it was all a trap set by Walton, and he regrettably fell for it.
Law enforcement sources said they have had frequent encounters with Walton, who they said often drives around recording video of law enforcement officers trying to catch them in bad situations, according to the article.
