HAUGHTON, La. — An officer who attempted to come to the aid of a woman and her two children trapped in floodwaters has resigned in the wake threats of disciplinary action from his department.
KSLA reports the officer, who does not want to be identified, spotted the family in need of rescue after flood waters overtook their SUV.
The officer sprang into action, but was eventually overcome by floodwaters himself until deputies and firefighters arrived to the scene and rescued all four people.
The “heroic rescue” resulted in the officer’s police SUV being totaled. The officer was due to meet with his agency over his alleged violation of policy and procedure, but turned in his badge Tuesday.
The chief of the police department, Rodney Farrington, would not confirm to KSLA whether the meeting was to address the damage to the vehicle or because the rescue attempt happened outside city limits.
This is reportedly the second time the officer has damaged a squad car while responding to an incident.
In a statement to the publication, the officer wrote that if faced with the same opportunity to help, he’d “do it all again.”
