SAN FRANCISCO — As iPhone apps and Twitter accounts proliferate, police officers in San Francisco can finally cross having an official e-mail address off their technological to-do lists.

San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr proudly reported Thursday that all of his police officers now have a department e-mail address, giving beat cops a means of corresponding with each other and with residents.

Previously, commanders and investigators were the primary e-mail users in the department, and Officer Albie Esparza said the increase had to come before the department seemed antiquated, The San Francisco Chronicle reported.

“I agree, this shouldn’t be news in 2011,” said San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr. “You can use (this) as a direct quote from me for the last several years: ‘Please, could we just - everybody have e-mail?’ ”
