Many officers think about backup weapons, but how about backup flashlights? Many departments issue a flashlight of some kind. If your department-issued light is rechargeable then it is a good idea to carry a back-up light that is battery operated and vice-versa.
Carry extra batteries and keep a charger at home and work or in the car. Today, flashlights are powerful and small enough that two on the belt is not a big deal. If you can, even keep an extra light in the car. This tip obviously comes out of experience.
