ATLANTA — More than 100 cameras make up the new surveillance system that police say will help curb crime across the city.
The Atlanta Police Department houses the Video Integration Center (VIC), which features floor-to-ceiling monitors that display surveillance footage of downtown, according to CBS Atlanta. Mayor Kasim Reed is optimistic about the technology, hoping to eventually link up places like Georgia State University and uptown grocery stores.
“When you have an individual on video, it really does enhance your ability to put criminals in jail,” Reed said.
A key component of Operation Shield, the system is the result of an Atlanta Police Department and Atlanta Police Foundation partnership aimed at linking communications between law enforcement and private security.
The city and the police foundation have each pitched in a half million dollars, which will supplement the $1.2 million granted by the state.
