PORTLAND, Ore. — Police arrested a teenager for a hit-and-run incident that occurred early Wednesday morning after friends of the drunk driver forwarded his Facebook status to Astoria police.

Police, who were already investigating the incident, matched fragments from the crash site to the damaged vehicle belonging to Jacob Cox-Brown, 18.

Cox-Brown had gotten the attention of fellow Facebook-users when he posted, “Drivin drunk ... classsic ;) but to whoever’s vehicle i hit i am sorry. :P.”

Deputy Chief Brad Johnston says Cox-Brown was charged with failure to perform the duties of a driver, according to CBS News. He was not charged with drunken driving because the Facebook post is not sufficient evidence that he was intoxicated.

“Astoria Police have an active social media presence,” the department said in a statement. “It was a private Facebook message to one of our officers that got this case moving, though. When you post ... on Facebook, you have to figure that it is not going to stay private long.”
