Kansas City police arrested three suspects near 20th Street and Lister Avenue late this afternoon after a drive-by shooting and chase that sent four persons to hospitals.
During the chase, someone in the suspect’s car fired at officers several different times. No officers were wounded.
One shooting victim from the 3000 block of East 31st Street was in a hospital in critical condition. The conditions of the other three wounded persons were unavailable.
With help from the police helicopter, patrol officers chased three suspects, who were wearing black hoodies and black coats as they fled in a car.
The suspects crashed into a fence on Chelsea Avenue, then bailed from their car. Witnesses reported that all three were carrying guns, and what appeared to be assault rifles lay on the ground as officers examined the scene.
After a short foot pursuit, police arrested two suspects in the 2000 block of Lister and recovered at least two guns. The third suspect was apprehended in an abandoned house.
Police asked for canine officers to track the suspects’ routes to see if they discarded any other weapons. Other officers scoured the chase route looking for shell casings.
Harold Shelby lives near where the chase ended and said he heard five or six shots fired. He said when he came outside he saw officers swarming around a sliver vehicle.
“It looked like the whole police force,” Shelby said.
