OAKLAND — Oakland police shot and killed a gun-wielding man Wednesday after he emerged from a car that officers had chased at high speeds for 10 minutes through East Oakland streets.
After the vehicle crashed at the intersection of 85th Avenue and San Leandro Street, a second person in the car, the driver, was captured after a short foot chase, police spokesman Capt. Ersie Joyner said.
Joyner said the pursuit began after officers responded to a call about shots fired on the 7600 block of Lockwood Avenue at 4:12 p.m. Residents told police the suspects sped away in a maroon Infiniti.
A patrol unit leaving the Eastmont Mall substation spotted the vehicle. Police pursued the car on a high-speed chase on Interstate 880 before exiting near the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
The suspects reached speeds of 40 to 60 mph on local streets, Joyner said.
Joyner said officers attempted tactical maneuvers to stop the car. At one point, the driver sped directly in the direction of officers.
After the Infiniti sped through a stop sign on San Leandro Street at 85th Avenue it struck a green Buick, ending the chase.
Police said the car’s passenger emerged with two guns and did not respond to officer’s commands.
“He did not comply,” Joyner said. “He was shot and killed.”
The vehicle burst into flames shortly after, Joyner said.
Police did not release the identity of the driver or the dead suspect.
“These individuals,” Joyner said, “are known to us.”
