HARTFORD, Conn. — Authorities say a man being transported to prison in a Connecticut police cruiser slipped out of his handcuffs and attacked the state trooper behind the wheel, causing the vehicle to crash.

State police say 24-year-old Chad Nadeau was en route to the Hartford Correctional Center on Friday night on domestic violence charges.

Police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance says Nadeau was in the passenger seat when he freed his hands and assaulted the trooper, causing the cruiser to swerve and eventually crash into the median on Interstate 91.

Police say Nadeau fled on foot but was soon apprehended.

The trooper and Nadeau had minor injuries.

Nadeau is being held on $100,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday to face charges from his original arrest and the escape attempt.
