BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Dash cam video capturing a Michigan officer getting struck by an out-of-control vehicle as the officer assisted another driver has been released.

The Macomb Daily News reports the officer stopped to help a driver who had gone off the road into the median February 14 when the crash occurred.

As the officer spoke with the driver, another vehicle lost control — striking the cop’s squad car and the civilian vehicle.

The officer was thrown into a ditch after being hit, according to the report. He has since been released from the hospital and is back on the force.

The Bloomfield Township police chief has urged drivers to slow down on the icy roads in the wake of the incident.

“It is imperative that drivers understand that during inclement weather, they need to slow down and maintain control of their vehicle. By slowing down, they can react to situations in front of them, like a patrol car with emergency lights on,” Police Chief Geof Gaudard told the Macomb Daily.

The driver that crashed into the officer received multiple citations in connection to the incident.
