CLEVELAND, Ohio – An off-duty Cleveland police officer was hospitalized Sunday after a person attempting to steal his car slashed him in the head with a screwdriver, according to police spokeswoman Sgt. Jennifer Ciacca.
At about 4 p.m., two people attempted to steal the officer’s vehicle at his home on West 123rd Street, Ciaccia said.
The officer saw the theft in progress and confronted the suspects. A struggle ensued, resulting in the slashing, Ciaccia said. The suspects, believed to be 16 to 20 years old, fled in a car.
The officer, who was not identified, was admitted to Cleveland Clinic. He was released Monday.
Police identified two suspects, and officers followed a car linked to one of them before it got away, Ciaccia said.
