2 traffic stop tips

1. On traffic stops, whenever possible, I wait for the return of the license plate information prior to exiting the patrol car for contact.

2. If making a nighttime stop, use all your possible lighting, (take-down and spotlight) and approach the car from a wide angle. This allows you to better view the interior of the car, and tactically, driver’s expect you to walk alongside the car, not slightly offset. How many times have you seen the driver trying to get a glimpse of you in the rear-view or side view mirrors?

When I get closer to the driver, I turn on my rechargeable mag light and shine it right in the driver’s eyes. This stuns him for a second, and I simply apologize for it when I make contact near the door.
