While conducting Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, one major area of concern has always been the officer’s need to focus on the eyes of the subject. In doing so, most officers tend to neglect or simply can not keep the hands of the subject in view. To eliminate this problem I used the following technique on all my HGN subjects: During the instruction phase of the test, tell the subject to place their hands on their cheeks to help prevent turning the head. This will do absolutely no good in preventing them from turning their head during the test, but it does get the hands up where the officer can see them at all times during the testing procedure.
