WASHINGTON – The Department of Justice announced the roll out of a new alert system aimed at keeping police officers safer.
The National Blue Alert system will send out intel to law enforcement agencies, the media, and the public about suspects who have harmed or have threatened to harm cops, the DOJ announced Friday.
Similar to an AMBER Alert, the system, which will operate nationally, is designed to disseminate information quickly in order to bring those suspected of violence against cops or potential violence against officers to justice, according to a press release.
“This National Police Week, we are proud to show our support for our nation’s brave police officers and to work with our federal partners to keep them safe,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement.
The legislation for the alert system was passed in 2015, after the ambush deaths of NYPD Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu.
