Laser technology aids Kan. traffic enforcement

Riley County will use the TruCAM to help reduce accidents

By Police1 Staff

MANHATTAN, Kan. — The Riley County Police Department is using laser technology to reduce accidents caused by drivers who follow other vehicles too closely.

The TruCAM video camera captures photographs of drivers who follow the vehicles in front of them at an unsafe distance, which is calculated – in feet or seconds – with a laser that officers can point at any two cars.

Riley County Police expect to use the device all over the city with an emphasis on an especially accident-prone stretch of highway K-18, according to KSNT. Along one stretch, there have been nearly 200 collisions in the past three years.

Drivers caught on TruCAM will face fines of up to $158.
