AUSTIN, Ark. — Austin police added a decal to their cruisers that bucked the popular trend of agencies adding “In God We Trust” to their patrol cars.
According to the department’s Facebook post, the agency added “We The People” as a commitment to uphold the Constitution.
“This is to reflect that as law enforcement officers, we are committed and sworn to uphold the laws of this nation and the ideals of the Constitution, without bias, prejudice, or personal opinion,” Chief James Kulesa wrote.
Kulesa told the Cabot Star-Herald while “In God We Trust” can be controversial, “there is no question with this, and it covers everybody…and it means the officers are part of the people.”
The post garnered hundreds of shares and comments. Users thanked the department for the choice phrase.
“Kudos to the Austin PD for sporting a secular, inclusive, and welcoming motto,” Scott McKellar wrote.
