SUMMERSIDE, Prince Edward Island, Canada (CP) -- A two-day standoff between police and a Summerside man armed with a shotgun ended quietly Wednesday with the man’s surrender.

The 51-year-old man barricaded himself in an apartment shortly after 8 p.m. Monday when a sheriff’s deputy tried to serve him with child support and maintenance papers.

The deputy left the apartment after the tenant showed him a firearm.

After a 39-hour vigil by an emergency response team, a negotiating team, RCMP, and a Charlottetown police dog unit, the man walked out of his apartment just after 11 a.m. Wednesday carrying only a plastic bag.

In response to orders from police, he laid down on the ground and was handcuffed and taken into custody.

Residents on three surrounding streets who were evacuated Monday were then allowed to return.

“I’m just happy to be able to go back to my own apartment to get clothes,” said Sandra Gallagher, a tenant of the apartment building where the man lived.

Deputy police Chief David Griffin said the man was being interviewed and will likely be charged with weapons offences.
