TRUMBULL, Conn. (AP) -- A police officer apparently shot himself to death Monday afternoon as state troopers were about to force their way into his home to end a 16-hour standoff, state police said.
Authorities were not releasing the Bridgeport officer’s name.
The standoff began at about 10:15 p.m. Sunday, when someone called 911 and hung up. Police went to the Country Lane home and found a woman and two children outside. The officer was heavily armed and refused to come out of the house, state police said.
Authorities evacuated several homes in the neighborhood as a precaution.
State police heard several shots from the home Monday, but spoke to the officer afterward. At about 2:30 p.m., power to the house was turned off and authorities broke a window preparing to enter the house. Then they heard another gunshot.
State police found the officer dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, said Sgt. J. Paul Vance, a state police spokesman.
The incident reportedly began as a domestic dispute between the officer and the woman. No other details were released.
