Officers spotted the suspect and ordered him to raise his hands; the man walked away before suddenly turning around and producing the knife

LOS ANGELES —The Los Angeles Police department released body camera footage showing an officer-involved shooting of a man who raised a knife and approached officers, according to a critical incident release.

The Aug. 22 incident began when officers responded to a call of assault with a deadly weapon. Call audio released by the department shows the 911 caller reporting that his brother, whom he called “mentally insane,” had threatened him with a knife and told him to leave the house.

When officers responded to the scene, they spotted the suspect opening the tailgate, apparently trying to climb in, dash camera footage shows. Officers first asked the man if he was the 911 caller but were quickly warned by a witness that he was the subject of the call.

Officers approached the man, instructing him to raise his hands and turn away from them. The man moved away from officers and fidgeted with his clothing, occasionally raising his arms but quickly lowering them each time.

He eventually turned away from the officer and began to walk away. Then the man suddenly turned around, producing a knife and moving toward officers.

Both officers fired shots, striking the man. Body camera footage shows officers giving him instructions to show himself unarmed before rendering medical aid.

They rendered aid until fire department personnel arrived. The man was transported to the hospital in stable condition, according to the release.

A 12-inch knife was recovered at the scene. The suspect has been charged with 2 counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, one count of assault with a deadly weapon likely to cause great bodily injury, one count of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of criminal threats.
